Angels in Human Form, A Tribute to Nurses and Caregivers | Betser Care

Angels in Human Form

A Reflection by Jean John (JJ)

I still remember that moment very clearly. During my recovery, a nurse once scolded me and insisted that I try to walk despite my discomfort. For a moment, I felt upset. I thought she didn't understand what I was going through. But later, I realised something that stayed with me. She understood recovery better than I understood my own fear. What felt harsh at that moment was actually care, responsibility, and experience combined. And maybe that's the true essence of nursing.

There are many paths in life, but nursing is one profession that heals, saves, and serves every single day often without rest, and without recognition for what truly happens behind hospital doors.

Doctors do incredible work and deserve the highest respect for diagnosing, guiding treatment, and saving lives. But the journey from fear to recovery is often carried quietly by those who stay beside the patient the longest.

From admission to discharge, nurses become that constant presence. They notice what others may miss, they sit with pain that isn't always spoken, and they stay awake beside patients while the rest of the world sleeps. At 2 AM, when everything feels heavier, they are still there. They do far more than giving medications, they bring reassurance, protect dignity, and bring healing.

I have personally seen how demanding this role is. Long mornings that stretch into sleepless nights, emotionally draining situations, emergencies, distressed families, and difficult moments that require a level of patience few truly understand. Many are spoken to harshly, many are misunderstood, and many are overlooked. Yet they return every day with the same commitment to care.

During COVID and other crises, when the world stepped back in fear, nurses stepped forward. They remained inside hospital walls, separated from their own families, caring for strangers as if they were their own. They sacrificed comfort, sleep, celebrations, and sometimes even their own health and lives so others could survive. And still, it often feels like their contribution hasn't been valued in the way it truly deserves emotionally, socially, or financially many times.

Care is not always soft. Sometimes it is firm and uncomfortable. Sometimes it is pushing someone to take a step they are afraid to take, because that step is necessary for healing. And nursing doesn't exist only in hospitals. There are home nurses who continue this care quietly after discharge, bringing healing into people's homes. There are also family members like parents, children, spouses, siblings who become caregivers out of love and responsibility. They may never wear a uniform, but they carry the same spirit. This is dedicated to all of them.

And today, I especially want to acknowledge my mother for the dedication, strength, and compassion she has shown throughout her journey in nursing. Through her, I learned that nursing is not just a profession, it is a true calling. There are so many days she saved lives even after her duty hours as a nurse.

To every nurse & caregiver reading this, you may not always be seen or appreciated the way you deserve, but your impact lives on in recoveries, silent prayers, memories, and in second chances. Hospitals may run on systems, medicine may advance through science, but healing often survives because of the heart of a caregiver.

This is not just a dedication. It is a thank you to every person who chose to care, even when it was difficult. The world may call you nurses, caregivers, or family, but to the lives you have touched, you will always be angels in human form.

Remember many times because of you, one could get a chance to see the next sunrise. ☺️
